Rehabilitation of North East Zone: Senate Considers Report

The senate on resumption today received the report of the committee on Ethics, privileges and public petition on the petition from TRLP LAW on behalf of senator Buruji Kashamu against the National Drug Law Agency as it debated the Nation Unity and peace corps bill to uphold and impart the attributes of the National Ethics for restituting diligence; rekindle and rejuvenate the virtues of discipline in the citizenry. It referred the bill to the committee o interior to report in two (2) weeks.

Also, the Senate debated the report of the committee on special duties on the establishment of presidential intervention committee on the rehabilitation of the North East Zone and agreed to amend the National Commission for Refugees Act to enable the commission function properly under the ambit of the law.

The Senate also in consideration of the report of the joint committee on Health, and Agriculture and Rural Development in respect of the motion on the ban on Nigerian Agricultural Products by the European Union, resolved that the Inter-ministerial Committee IMC members to oversee the activities of the newly established National Food Safety Management committee which is yet to meet since their inauguration in January 2015 are advised to meet to ensure suspension is lifted.

The Senate also resolved that adequate phyto-sanitary measures by responsible establishments should be put in place to address lapses in pre requisite programmes such Good Agricultural practice (GAP) Good storage practices (GSP) certification scheme and training for farmers.

Finally, the senate debated the motion on the urgent need to review the Excravos Gas Project (LGP) Escravos Gas to liquid Project to WWP Chevron and mandated the committee o Gas to investigate all issues relating to the project with a view to establishing actual level of compliance with contractual terms.
