Senate Defers Ministerial Screening

  • Saraki writes Buhari on 18 Confirmed Ministers.news123
  • Amaechi, others for screening next week Tuesday

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has written officially to President Muhammadu Buhari today on the confirmation of 18 Ministers so far are part of the first list submitted by President Buhari to the Senate in accordance with section 147 (2) of the constitution as amended, declaring them fit to serve to serve as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

However, the deferred confirmation of the former governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and a few others could not hold today but the Chairman, Senate Ad hoc Committee on Information, Senator Dino Maleye has said ‘’we are going to screen nine of them on Tuesday and the remaining nine on Wednesday. The committee has a one-line report (on Amaechi) that the matter is in court and that in compliance with our laid down rules and regulations that any case that is undergoing judicial remedy cannot be discussed and that is why we have distanced ourselves from it and the report will be presented on Tuesday by the grace of God and I assure Nigerians that former governor Rotimi Amaechi by the grace of God will be screened on Tuesday’’

It is recalled that on Tuesday the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Senator Samuel Anyanwu while presenting the report of the committee on the case of Amina Mohammed referred to his committee said the Ethics Committee was yet to finish the petition on Rotimi Amaechi.

However, the screening exercise could not continue as scheduled following the unfinished job by the Ethics & Privileges Committee.

Meanwhile, the nomination of Ms. Aisha Abubakar, a nominee for Sokoto State suffered setback today as Senator Ibrahim Gobir (Sokoto East) has submitted a petition against her alleging incompetence. He claimed the nominee was not known to any of the three senators representing Sokoto State. The petition has been referred to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for investigation.

Screening continues next week Tuesday.
