Senate Flays Medical Tourism, Professional Rivalry in the Health Sector

Dysfunctional ties occasioned by professional rivalry in the  health sector has been frowned at today in sthetoscopethe senate just as the continual depletion of foreign reserve occasioned by medical tourism in the health sector has been condemned.

The Senate cautioned against this today during an interactive session between the Senate Committee on Health and the ministry of health, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) under the health sector led by the Health minister, Professor Isaac Folorunsho Adewole, his minister of state, health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire.

Failure of workable health policy and implementation in addition to poor funding has left many Nigerians particularly the elite to embark on unbridled medical tourism oversees to developed Countries leaving majority of Nigerians who can ill-afford the bill at the mercy of the system.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Dr. Lanre Tejuoso, bemoaned the professional rivalry in the sector which he described as unnecessary and the brain drain which had relatively impacted the sector particularly the hemorrhage inflicted on the foreign reserve consequently.

He tasked the minister and policy formulators for the sector to think out of the box in formulating policies and framework to tackle the systemic malaise & setback afflicting the sector.

The committee noted that the health sector recorded highest number of litigations which is big challenge.

The committee is however optimistic the leadership of the health sector is capable of turning the fortunes of the sector around.

The minister who also decried the professional rivalry promised that the ministry is doing enough to douse the tension while averting industrial actions and decried the underfunding of the sector which has undermined proactive policy implementation.
