Remit Statutory Obligations to NDDC, Senate Committee On NDDC tells NLNG

The Senate Committee on the Niger Delta frowned at the blatant disregard of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Act that necessitated the senate nddcremittance of statutory contributions towards the NDDC by some Federal Government agencies.

This was made known when the committee received a delegation from the Ecological Fund Office and the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Company and discovered that these bodies were not conversant with some of their financial obligations towards the NDDC.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Peter Nwaboshi expressed extreme dissatisfaction that the law had been perpetually abused since 2000 and said that there was a need to invite Accountant General of the Federation to throw light on the issue.

“It is not whether they contributed a certain percentage. The point is that they had refused to obey the law since year 2000. The next step the committee will take is to invite the Accountant General of the Federation and investigate the matter to know why the two agencies of government had not been remitting money to the NDDC. We are conducting a holistic investigation into the activities of the NDDC. What we want to do is to find out first; the claims in some quota that a colossal

amount had been given to the people of the Niger Delta Region through the NDDC and there is nothing on the ground. We want to know how much the agency had received so far from year 2000 to date, what projects have been executed with the money, agencies who are contributing to the NDDC”.

The Committee asked the Managing Director of the NLNG, Mr Babs Omotowa and he said that they have not been contributing money to the NDDC. He showed the Committee a Supreme Court judgement which described NLNG as a Gas Processing Company and that there is a Gas Act which precedes the NDDC Act.
